Netherlands, 15th Sep 2026 — Approximately 1,200 participants are expected to gather at NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam on September 19 for A Percussion Piece, a large-scale participatory artwork by media artist and curator Maxim Tyminko. The performance will bring together collective sound, visual art, and audience participation in a shared creative experience exploring human connection and the role of art in public life.

Organized and produced by Stichting antiwarcoalition.art, the event invites members of the public to become active participants in an artwork rather than simply observe it. Through improvised percussion, symbolic masks, and coordinated collective action, the performance will transform the NDSM Wharf into a temporary space for artistic expression and interaction
The performance is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Participant check-in will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Turning Everyday Objects into Collective Art
At the centre of A Percussion Piece is a simple creative concept: everyday objects can become instruments, and individual contributions can form a larger artistic experience.
Participants are invited to bring household items such as pots, pans, cans, buckets, and lids to use as improvised percussion instruments. Together, these objects will produce a collective soundscape shaped by the people taking part.
Participants will also wear cardboard masks based on real individuals whose stories inform the artwork. The masks, sounds, and movements will form part of a shared visual and auditory composition, bringing individual experiences into a collective public setting.
The project draws on participatory art practices and relational aesthetics, approaches that place emphasis on human interaction, shared experiences, and the relationships created through artistic activity.
Rather than presenting a finished object for an audience to view, the work develops through the presence and contributions of its participants.
“People enter an emotional connection with real people who are imprisoned right now, and they express this connection through rhythm, sound, and noise,” said Maxim Tyminko, the artist and author of the original concept.

An Artwork Designed for Public Participation
The organizers describe the performance as an opportunity for people from different backgrounds to take part in a common artistic experience. By combining sound, movement, and visual elements, the project encourages participants to explore how individual actions can contribute to a larger collective expression.
The performance will be filmed, with the resulting video artwork intended for possible future presentation in museums, galleries, and other cultural spaces. This planned documentation will allow the project to reach audiences beyond Amsterdam and extend the experience into different artistic and cultural settings.
Members of the public interested in participating are encouraged to follow the organizers’ official channels for event information and participation updates.
